Stokes worked with RGA to create a visual journey of the history of the Goethals Bridge, a pair of cable-stayed bridge spans connecting New Jersey to Staten Island, New York. The new structures opened to traffic in 2017 and 2018, replacing a cantilever bridge built in 1928. Stokes created an historic documentary about the old bridge and the construction of the replacement structures.

Stokes’ team researched archives to identify visually appealing and identifiable photos and imagery to create a step back in time to help viewers appreciate the story of the Goethals Bridge. Our team assured the accuracy and the rights of the images for the documentary. In step with the crews during every phase of construction, our team captured the modern structures’ rise and the dismantling of the old bridge in 2017.
Stokes created a visually appealing and interesting documentary that ensured the story of the Goethals Bridge would be captured for future generations. Stokes delivered the video to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) in digital format and supplied DVD copies for use as part of school lesson plans.
Stokes’ talented team worked closely with the PANYNJ and used the archival experience of Richard Grubb and Associates to explore the history behind the Goethals Bridge, named for Major General George Washington Goethals, who supervised construction of the Panama Canal and was the first consulting engineer of the Port Authority.
From conception to construction, Stokes examined the intricacies and challenges involved in building this impressive bridge. Using historical documents along with testimonials from those directly involved on the project, the documentary tells the story of the Goethals Bridge all the way up to the modern era with the newly constructed bridge replacement. The 24-minute video (seen here https://vimeo.com/220522921) has been seen by many and provides the opportunity for all to gain more knowledge about this important economic and social connection between New Jersey and New York.
