Newark Penn Station Modernization Project

Originally opened in 1935, Newark Penn Station plays an important economic and transportation role in drawing visitors to the city of Newark. The station also acts as a portal for commuters and more occasional travelers who make Newark their home, work, or school destination. Because of its importance to the city and the community, the station needs to evolve and adapt with those who commute through and operate within it.

Public Outreach

What we Did

Tasked with public engagement for this project, Stokes Creative Group, Inc. (Stokes) has developed and maintained an open dialogue with the public. As part of the process, stokes has developed a stakeholder engagement plan (SEP) in consultation with NJ TRANSIT and project stakeholders. The team has established advisory working groups and developed outreach events and multilingual programming that reach diverse populations in Newark and has coordinated a street ambassador program as well as a project website. Stokes also conducted a survey to solicit feedback from commuters and Newark residents, including those who do not use the station, to better understand who is visiting the station as well as their patterns of use and their priorities. The results of the survey will contribute to design recommendations in the Newark Penn Station Modernization Project Master Plan currently being prepared.

Key Features And Notable outcomes

NJ TRANSIT is committed to restoring and modernizing the historic Art Deco station and has embarked on the Newark Penn Station Modernization Project, which includes an update to the station and the creation of a master plan. Once completed, Newark Penn Station will meet the modern-day expectations of a clean, comfortable, sustainable, world-class travel experience for all customers.
