The Neponsit Beach Hospital, an NYC Health + Hospitals facility which closed in 1998, is scheduled for demolition expected to take several months. Located on Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, NY, the three-building site abuts Jacob Riis Park and is adjacent to the neighborhood of Neponsit. When demolition is completed, the property will come under the control of the National Park Service.

OUR ROLES
The Stokes Creative Group, Inc. (Stokes) public outreach team kept affected stakeholders informed by organizing meetings, answering questions via email and phone calls, and creating a monthly update newsletter. The team organized pop-up tent events in high-foot-traffic locations with Stokes staff on hand to educate people about the demolition, distribute flyers, and respond to questions and comments. The Stokes team also coordinated, prepared, and facilitated a stakeholder meeting. At the conclusion of the meeting, Stokes created a detailed summary report with important feedback from the stakeholders.
Because these buildings are near a residential neighborhood as well as a public park, it is critical that proper public outreach take place to keep residents and park users educated both about plans for demolition and about progress during the razing of the facility. It is also important that these stakeholders have a forum in which to ask questions and express concerns during both periods. Stokes staff was on hand to address these concerns.
